      ABOUT US

The firm Isabel Matiella was founded in 1998 with the artwork of Justina DeCima, inspired by the Mexican region of ‘Las Labradas. This is a beach where ancient inhabitants -of what today is Sinaloa in Mexico- carved stones with abstract symbols and figures. Hence the name ‘Las Labradas’ which literally translates to ‘carved stones’. Initially more than 600 pieces of jewelry were created. This collection was certified by the National Institute of Anthropology and History of Mexico.

In early designs of the firm, motifs of Mexican culture were the main focus. As time went by, the brand started to gain popularity among clients with rather diverse preferences. New artwork was created based on far more eclectic topics, yet you could always identify a very iconic style throughout the different collections.

Creations by Isabel Matiella have been exhibited in Mazatlan’s archaeological museum and other cultural venues. Also in Mexico, artwork has been displayed in the INAH museum in Sonora, and in the Yoreme Forum organized on a yearly basis by DIFOCUR (Cultural Bureau of Mexico). We can also mention international presentations such as the ones held in the Beaucicaut Hall in Paris and the Cultural Center of Phoenix, Arizona.

Among other collections made in silver, gold and semiprecious stones we can mention the series inspired by the paintings of Antonio Lopez Saenz - one of Mexico’s most renowned artists. Lopez Saenz manages to capture the essence of Mazatlan, his hometown, incorporating recognizable elements from the region. In a similar fashion, Isabel Matiella has been able to transform those images into jewelry pieces. The combination of styles evolves to become a very attractive art piece. This collection was presented in an exhibition shared with the prominent painter, in Culiacan’s Airport in 2003.

From the firm’s portfolio we can also mention the ‘Silver Waves’ series, published in the worldwide-distributed Surfer Magazine; ‘Fire Opals and Crosses’ a private collection; ‘Crab Charms’ collaborative project with sculptor Rodrigo Becerra; custom made jewelry requested by the government of the state of Durango to serve as a gift for actors Salma Hayek, Penelope Cruz, Christian Martel and director Luque Beson, in the event ‘100 years of cinema’; and an Egyptian-theme collection for producer Timothy Van Rellin.

Isabel Matiella combines gold, silver, colored gemstones, crystals, corals, textiles and merges these elements into delicate pieces of jewelry that tell a story of love for art, life, and its environment. It projects the artist’s sensitivity and talent to encompass very eclectic elements into beautiful jewels.
